Palmetto Palm
Palmetto palm or
palmetto [Span.,=little
palm], common name
for palm trees of the
genera Sabal and
Serenoa, ranging from
the sandy pinelands
of the S United States
to Colombia.
In cooler climates the palmetto is often grown as
a greenhouse ornamental. An extract of the dried
ripe fruits of the saw palmetto, Serenoa repens,
are used as an herbal remedy for urinary
conditions in elderly men. Palmetto palms are
classified in the division Magnoliophyta , class
Liliopsida, order Arecales, family Palmae.

Sabal palmetto, the common native palm of the
Southeastern states, is one of the trees called
cabbage palm; it has an erect stem and
fan-shaped leaves that are edible when young.
Palmetto wood is used for pilings and the leaves
for thatch. South Carolina, where the tree is
indigenous, is sometimes called the Palmetto
State.
Windmill Palm
The trunk appears to be wrapped in burlap. A
very slowgrowing palm, Windmill Palm can
reach 40 feet in height but is often seen much
smaller, 10 to 20 feet tall. Windmill Palm works
well as a framing tree,
accent, specimen, patio or urn subject. It is ideal
for use as an accent in a shady shrub border or
by a front entryway. It does well in confined
areas and is hardy to 10-degrees F. or lower.

The scientific name for the Pindo Palm is - Butia
capitata. Pindo Palm is also known as Jelly
Palm and Wine Palm. Pindo Palm is native to
Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. Its graceful
appearances with blue-green fronds make it
great for pool-side plantings, and also for
container use. It is one of the most popular
Florida Palm Trees.
Pindo Palm has a heavy grey trunk covered with
old leaf bases that is around 15 ft tall with
diameter of 1-1.5 ft. Rounded canopy of
grey-blue graceful fronds curve in toward the
ground emerging from the top of the thick trunk.
It is a very slow growing palm. It likes full sun or
partial shade and well drained soil. Pindo Palm
is one of the hardiest feather-leafed palms. It
and can tolerate cold up to 10F. Temperatures
below 5 degrees will cause damage. It's a great
container plant.
